Shaving
How often should you replace razor blades?

Short answer
Most cartridge razor blades stay comfortable for around five to seven shaves, which is roughly every one to two weeks for someone who shaves several times a week.
A razor blade does not fail suddenly. It dulls gradually, and most men only notice once the shave already tugs, irritates or leaves patches behind. By that point the blade has usually been past its best for several shaves.
The short answer
As a general guide, a multi-blade cartridge stays comfortable for about five to seven shaves. If you shave three times a week, that is a new blade roughly every two weeks. If you shave daily, it is closer to once a week.
What changes the interval
- Beard density and hair coarseness: thicker hair blunts an edge faster.
- Shave frequency: more passes per week means fewer weeks per blade.
- Shave area: adding neck, head or body shaving shortens blade life considerably.
- Preparation: shaving on dry or unsoftened hair wears the edge faster than shaving after a warm shower.
- Storage: a blade left wet in the shower corrodes long before it goes blunt.
Signs your blade is finished
- The razor pulls instead of gliding.
- You go over the same area two or three times.
- You get more razor burn, redness or small nicks than usual.
- The blade rinses poorly or shows visible discolouration.
How to make a blade last longer
Rinse the cartridge thoroughly after every pass, shake off the water rather than tapping it against the basin, and store it somewhere dry outside the shower. Corrosion, not cutting, ends the life of most blades.
